the safe driving advicebook
welcome to this week's "the safe drivers advicebook"!!
here is some general driving advice for you.
1) when you merge into a lane, always check not only the lane you are merging into, but a lane beyond that as well! there may be reckless drivers who are cutting into your new lane without being aware of you.
2) when you have parked in a parking space, keep your seatbelt on until you are fully ready to get out of the car. the chance of accidents happening here is still not zero!
3) when you are zipper merging, please allow others to merge as well! being aggressive at this critical time will only cause issues.
4) unless you are a Boss at distracted driving, please try not to fiddle with car audio equipment, especially a jammed tape deck. depending on your coolheadedness, it tends to cause a few rash decisions.
5) be sure to maintain your car well through smooth driving. chances are, you want to keep using this car for a long while. treat it as your best friend, do not abuse it! this also means no donuts in the 3am walmart parking lot.
6) on the topic of maintenance: change your tires oft, since a worn tread is a terrible omen even on dry roads. the recommended frequency for a change is once every 6 months.
7) beware the engine spiders.
8) when you lose traction on icy roads, slow down and steer in the direction that your car's rear is sliding. be careful not to overcorrect, else you will be fighting the car for a full minute or veer into oncoming traffic. remember to keep snow chains in your car.
9) know how to give your car a basic maintenance! learning how to give oil changes, check the battery, or replace the air filter is a huge money saver. just remember to write down your maintenance dates on the oil cap and stickers!
10) do not change lanes in intersections. it is extremely dangerous for all drivers in the area. look and think about the intersection rules. remember that you do not "absolutely have to make it." you can always afford to take a little detour for the sake of safety.
11) california residents: even though it is legal here, try to avoid rolling stops. to be as safe as possible, you should stop all the way, and only when you feel that lurch backwards you should be looking to see if you are clear to go again.
12) police radar sensors are legal in some states, while radar jammers are illegal. laser jammers ARE legal. be careful to know the difference.
13) when your car is not parked, keep your music down! you need to be able to hear any emergency vehicles so that you can stop for them.
14) and when i say stop for emergency vehicles, i mean pull over and wait at a complete stop, until it has fully passed you. do not simply exist in their way!
15) at night, watch out for jaywalkers who are wearing all black. even if they are not visible because of their own choice in clothing, it is still entirely your fault if you hit them.
16) depending on where you live, maybe you would find that investing in a dashcam is necessary. generally it is good to know that you have another pair of eyes for if your car is parked, if you are involved in an accidents, or if you get wrongfully pulled over.
17) use your turn signals when you change lanes. newsflash: other drivers, especially newbies, can find it difficult to read your car's ever-so-slight movements. your blinkers exist for a reason.
18) try to avoid badly maintained roads, if you can. too much of the rough and bumpy rocks will wear out your tires and suspension prematurely, and you will definitely get more rock chips.
19) if you have issues staying hydrated, try keeping a bottle of water with you in a cup holder! taking a sip for every stoplight is quite effective.
20) stay aware for the context of any high beams directed to you. rude people use them to be aggressive or derogatory, such as when you are "too slow" for them and they cannot pass you. but better drivers on the road will use them as warnings, such as if there is a risk ahead. this will oft include things like potholes, landslide risks, accidents, cops, floods, or construction.
